Suburb Profile - Randwick

 




Randwick is located on the northern boundary of Randwick City and is bounded by the suburbs of Kensington to the west and Clovelly/Coogee to the east. The famous landmarks include the large open space area of the Randwick Racecourse, the Randwick Hospital Complex (including the Prince of Wales Hospital), and acres of grass and woods on Centennial Park.  A large proportion of the suburb allows for medium density residential development and includes houses and townhouses up to multi storey apartments. Approximately 60% of all private dwellings in Randwick are flats, units or apartments. The North Randwick Conservation Area is significant for its Federation and inter-war housing.  The name Randwick comes from the English village of the same name that was the birthplace of Simon Randwick, who became a prominent in the development of the suburb.

Randwick has a large commercial area (extending along Belmore Road) which also incorporates multi storey apartments above. The commercial centre of Randwick and The Spot (plus the Randwick Ritz cinema complex) include a number of significant buildings which are listed by Council as heritage items and included in heritage conservation areas, recognising significant "Art Deco" development. Randwick is 6km east of the CBD, and is well serviced by buses to Circular Quay and Railway Square.  Bus services operate on the main roads in Randwick, with buses along Belmore Road providing a public transport interchange, with a north/south connection and Alison Road providing east/west connections. Bus services are the only form of public transport available to the suburb.

Randwick has plenty of interesting ethnic eateries that reflect the diverse culture of the suburb and its neighbours. Cellini Pizzeria Restaurant, Jimbaran (Indonesian) restaurant, Little Istanbul Turkish Restaurant, Azteca's Mexican Restaurant, Sabai Tong Thai Restaurant, Mands Indian Restaurant are a few names to mention.

Plenty of schools can be found in this family oriented suburb. There are Randwick High, Randwick Primary, Marcellin, Brigidine College, Emmanuel School, Claremont College and Our Lady of the Sacred heart, as well as numerous day care and preschool centres.  The campus of the University of New South Wales occupies a large piece of Randwick land.
